It's been almost 2 months since my last post and Aesha has changed significantly. I took Aesha to UCSF Children't Gastrointenstinal department. They checked her reflex and her gave her a once over and determined that for now, she needed to increase her caloric intake. Since then, Aesha's eating has turned a corner and she's taking in more food. I believe the signing language CD's have helped her to communicate with us when and what she wants to eat/drink. Also, Karen has helped immensly during the times she's stayed to take care of Aesha on two separate occasions.

Aesha is still small, but she's not gaunt anymore. She's also longer and bigger and so full of life and character. She's constantly signing now and it's such a pleasure to watch her take everything in and process it. I love snuggling with her every day still. Yes, she still sleeps with me, but I can't help it - I miss her so much during the day. We only have a couple of hours in the evening from when I pick her up from daycare to when she goes to bed. As she gets older and communicates more, becomes more of a person/individual, I miss her more. She continues to show signs of stubborness and a mind of her own, which I love and want to nurture. AG and I have to catch ourselves from congratulating her when she refuses to acknowledge us or something we've asked of her. We find it highly amusing, but of course, we don't want her to roll over us. She still needs to be taught some things (i.e. she bites me many times for fun, and I think it's adorable and have not told her it was wrong. She has then decided to bite Nora, another little girl, and we realized she doesn't know the difference.)

This weekend, AG and I get a rare opportunity to leave Aesha with her Grandparents while we jet off to Santa Cruz for a romantic getaway. I'll miss her, but I've been missing AG and our time and am excited to spend a weekend together, snuggling, reconnecting and dreaming together.

Someone pinch me

Ok, I think someone slipped some "sexiness" into my water this morning. Just got back from the gym. Monday, I took a kickboxing class, yesterday a yoga class and today just got out of a Zumba class. No makeup, hair in a ponytail - I heard a bunch of brothers catcalling and whistling... I looked around to see what the commotion was all about, only to find out they were directed at moi. Still in shock, I walked to the cafeteria and got a quick flirty smile and and attention from the brother behind the counter. He offered me extra on my order, and flashed me a sweet smile wishing me a wonderful weekend.

I'm not saying this is all new to me, but ever since I've gotten pregnant and had Aesha, I haven't felt very sexy. There's an extra 10lbs on me, flaps of skin on my abs, stretch marks and 2lbs bags under my eyes. It's been a long time since I received attention from the brothers... so who put the sexiness in my coffee this morning?

Fall, coconut milk and Aesha

I didn't want readers to think that my life is just all about being tired. In my last post, I was tired when I wrote it, and maybe didn't include all the wonderful daily things that happen in between the feedings, work and life. Some really wonderful things that are happening with Aesha: she's definitely learning to blow kisses, calls the dogs "daw"; calls her daddy "da, da" and tells me exactly what she wants to eat by nodding yes or no. She's very interested in how things are mechanically put together, and likes to open jars and lids. Her favorite word is still "no" which I'm sure she picked up from AG and I when we talk to the dogs. Last night, in her sleep, wheneverI attempted to put her in her crib, she would repeat "no no no no no" deliriously in her sleep instead of crying. It must be ingrained. She also follows AG often now and is interested in trying to get down the stairs when he goes to let the dogs out. She is frequently playing by herself more; in the kitchen corner, by the dog's water bowls, in her room.... In summary, we are having a blast communicating with her and the her biggest frustration is with us idiots who can't understand her communicative efforts.

On another note, Aesha had her 12 month checkup last Friday. Our doctor is now more concerned about her lack of weight gain. She has gone from 75th at birth to now less than 10% percentile. I see a connection between her weight gain and her inability to drink/eat milk/dairy. At this age, most kids are picky and where they get most of their nutrition is through milk/dairy products. I've been doing research on lactose intolerant vs. milk allergies. Most infants are intolerant to casein which is the protein in milk, and the inability to break that down. Only 2-3% of all children are actually allergic to milk. Which is why as they get older, they outgrow this and are able to break it down. Whereas most adults are intolerant to lactose, the sugar, within milk. On Friday, we ran a series of blood tests on Aesha to determine her allergies and what's going on with her body.

Dr. Treece recommended that I also take Aesha to a nutritionist. So the last several days, I've reached out to our community to find one. I've also disclosed to our doctor and researched more online about 2vc - the condition Aesha had inutero. I remembered that 2VC infants had gastrointestinal issues and when we had one ultrasound prior to birth, the nurses thought they saw some debris in her kidneys. There is a link between 2VC and kidney-related issues. It's scary to think about. But after discussing the 2vc with our doctor, we decided to do an ultrasound on her kidneys either this week or next. I've also booked an appointment with UCSF GI/Nutrutionist Clinic. I felt that it was important for me to figure out biologically what's happening with Aesha, and that will include a more clinical assessment than the holistic approach we would have gone. Some blood reports came back indicating that Aesha is slightly anemic. I'm hoping that the remaining results will confirm that she's actually not allergic to dairy. I have a hunch her kidneys might not be processing waste properly and thereby causing a reaction in her skin.

My research on dairy also resulted in discovering that if one is lactose/casein intolerant, there are varying degrees and I can give Aesha up to 1 cup of milk a day if her case is not extreme. Since she doesn't have diarhea nor vomit with milk, I assumed her case is less severe. I haven't quite given her 1 cup of milk yet, that will need to wait. Yesterday, I gave her 10 spoonfuls of youghurt, which has a lot less casein. As of today, she's responded well, with no immediate breakouts. I added youghurt to her daily lunch at daycare and am hoping she'll be able to digest more calcium through this medium.

Through my research, I stumbled upon more great health information. Coconut milk and coconut juice is the current "wonder food." Coconut milk is made by extracting the meat, boiling it in water and straining it through a cheesecloth. The coconut juice is the watery substance when you crack open a young green coconut. Both have amazing healing powers, including high levels of lauric acid which is most common in breastmilk and has the ability to boost one's immune system. Coconut juice is also very similar to the plasma in our blood and has been used in WWII for transfusion purposes. It's one of the best hydrating vehicle in mother nature for humans because its makeup is so similar to our blood. This information is extremly fascinating to me since I love coconut juice and always bring tons of it out to BurningMan. Little did I know that my body had instinctually brougth out the best thing for us to hydrate with, in an environment where hydration is an issue.

Of course, I ran out to our Asian market and bought tons of coconut milk and juice. I have yet to figure out to get Aesha to drink the milk and juice since she has an aversion to cold beverages. Today, instead of packing a bottle of rice milk, I filled her bottle with a little coconut milk. I'm hoping that she will drink it if it's warm. Coconut milk is also rich in fat, which Aesha desperately needs for brain/neurological development. For our benefit, I've been making smoothies in the morning with coconut milk instead of milk. I add a banana, frozen pineapple and mango and 1 package of coconut milk instead of regular milk and some orange juice. It's delicious. Today I added raw cacao - which has the highest amount of antioxidants (better than blueberries).

Our GI/nutritionist appointment with UCSF is scheduled for Dec. 3rd. However, I've contacted teh nutritionist (that was referred to me) and my doctor and had them contact USCF to get us an earlier appointment. I can't wait that long to get Aesha on track.

Finding a Rhythm

BM is over, Aesha's first birthday is over and we are all recovering nicely. Slowly, a rhythm to my week is starting to take shape.

Aesha is up at 6:30am - I try to keep her in bed with me as long as possible. But inevitably, she hears the dogs and wants to greet them. Some days I close the door and place her on the floor with the dogs. With one eye open and on her, the other trying to rest, I allow her to wander around the room before getting into too much trouble.

By 6:45 or 7am she is not happy being alone with the dogs. I drag myself out of bed and head to the kitchen where I grab her corn puffs and offer her a handful. All dog bowls (food and water) must be placed out of her reach before leaving her to crawl around the living room and kitchen. Some days, I start the coffee grinding. But lately, she doesn't want to be on the floor and wants to be held. I attempt to make her lunch and mine, brush my teeth, wash my face and sometimes even take a shower, one handed.

7:30 - If I haven't been able to put on clothes and brush my teeth b/c she's tired and clingy, I hand her over to AG for 10 minutes while I make a mad dash to prepare myself for the day.

8:00 - I grab the following items with Aesha in tow to the car: purse, pump, my lunch/coffee/juice, Aesha's diaper bag and lunch. Somehow I get us all in the car, strapped down and head out to the daycare, drop her off and head into work.

5pm - I head out of the office to pick up the little monster. Usually, she's very excited to see me for the first 5 minutes, until I put her in the carseat. Then she's whining or screaming the 5 minutes it takes to get home. I drag everything plus her out of the car and into the house. Most days she won't let me put her down b/c she misses me and hasn't seen me all day. Some days, I get a little respite if AG's already home either he grabs her or the dogs are upstairs and she's excited to see the dogs for 2 minutes. Then it's back to holding while I try to make her dinner and ours. At some point, she decides she's had enough of food or is completely frustrated with me for trying to push food into her mouth.

7pm - we head to the bathtub. Usually, this is fun time and she enjoys being naked and in the warm water. Whatever cups and toys are in the tub, she will use to drink tons of bath water. 15 minutes in the tub, I pull her out, wrap her in a fluffy towel, clean her ears and head to her room where I allow 2 minutes of naked time. By now, she's tired and cranky and I can barely hold her still to put on the diaper while she's screaming and kicking at me.

7:30pm we are on the rocking chair and she's nursing. Hopefully she'll pass out in the next half hour. If not, and AG's home, then I hand her to AG to finish the job. Then I finish making our dinner, eat dinner and wash the dishes. If there is any energy left, I try to do some laundry but usually it's 9pm and I have some time to check emails before she wakes up at 10am for another nursing. By then, I'm too tired and I take her into the bedroomo and pass out. Between 10am and 6t:30, I will wake up at least 4 more times to nurse her throughout the night. Lately, she tosses back and forth beginning at 4:30am until 6:30. Otherwise, everything starts all over again.

On weekends, the morning are more relaxed and some days the family will take a walk to Philz for coffee. But mostly, AG and I are exhausted and one of us is up at 6:30 with her, while allowing the other to catch up on rest.

And how do people do it with more than one child? I cannot imagine having to get Aesha ready for daycare while nursing another child. It's doable, I know... it's been done for thousands of years and happening now.. but I cannot fathom having enough energy at the moment. AG and I are barely surviving. It's fun, but quite a delirious ride and we are always exhausted. I can only hope that at some point, she will sleep through the night thus allowing us to sleep through the night. If that can happen, then I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Now I know how people get old...

First Day

My first day at work... feels like the first day of school. Got my picture taken (for my badge), received notebooks and pens, signed into my computer, filled out lots of forms went to a lot of meetings and met a lot of people. Very similar, except I will receive a paycheck instead of grades for being there.

The Gap is similar to any corporate headquarters, but I realized I've been spoiled working at a high tech software company. Computer access to the internet with little supervision is not common to general corporate America. My first day at work and already, everything feels different. In the past I enjoyed being the worker bee, with my head down and hoping everyone would leave me alone to do my job. Now, I'm mentally aware of every connection I make. I take note of each person I meet, what they do, their title, how do they fit into the scheme. I'm thinking three steps ahead trying to understand each piece of every position and attempting to remember all the pieces of each project that will integrate into the direction the company is heading. I like this mental change. Makes what I do much more interesting.

The commute is so nice. It took me 10 minutes to get to work and to return home and pick up Aesha. I can drive on 101 or 280, and for lunch I can go to all the stores off of 280 that felt so far away before. Already I feel changes, which are all positive.

Back from the land of Burning

We left, spent the week trying to catch time, and returned unsatisfied. That's what it felt like, and it feels like that often, trying to catch time. By the time we reached the gates, we were exhausted from lack of sleep. Thought we could make it up either napping during the day or the evenings. We were sadly mistaken. We arrived at 4:20am Tuesday morning, no traffic - smooth ride. We found our campmates easily but it was too early to set up tent. AG and I took off to the playa for a chance to check out the sunrise. Good thing we did, we never made it back to the playa.

As the sun rose, we found a beautifully lit purple tree in the middle of 8:00 and somewhere. We sat down and watched the sun rise slowly. We found a little chick far from home? By 6am, we headed back to camp to set up tent. We didn't sleep until Wednesday morning at 8am, and then only for 3 hours. I remember mostly hanging out with friends at camp and trying to stay awake. One night, Rachel and CC hung out with us in our tent. We had a little smoke and talked for a couple of hours. It was one of the more memorable nights. By Friday morning, I was eager to pack and leave. The days were exhaustingly hot making it difficult to nap past 9am. AG and I slept possibly 2-3 hours each morning from 6am-9am. I drove all night and reached SF by 3am. We tiptoed in the house, took showers and prepared to sleep.

However, Aesha heard or felt me and woke up. I tried holding her but she wouldn't let me. She allowed AG to hold her but she wouldn't allow me near her at all. My heart churned with guilt. Next morning it was the same. She woke up early and AG took her to the Grandma's to play allowing me to sleep in 2 extra hours from 6:30 to 8:30am. But I missed her so much, I woke up hoping she'd let me close to her. She didn't. So I sat in the kitchen watching her while she played, keeping a close eye on me. If I left the room, she would crawl around to find me, and when she did she wouldn't get close. This little game went on for a couple of hours until I finally hid in the master bathroom and she couldn't find me for 10 minutes and began to cry. I picked her up and she finally allowed me to.

A family friend who works with children and understands their behavior had this to say about the incident:

Hi Ari,
Your dad and Chris just left and I thought I would drop you a short note.Chris was telling us about their week with Aesha and how, when you came back she was "rejecting" Toni. I was talking with Chris about the meaning ofthat behavior and she said I should write to you.
I teach about child development so I just wanted to tell you that Aesha'sbehavior is not only predictable, it is very healthy. It makes a statementabout the quality of the attachment relationship between mother anddaughter. It's Aesha's way of saying to Toni - You are the most importantperson in my universe and I want you to know how much I missed you. If shedidn't care, and didn't demonstrate that she cared that you went away Iwould be worried.
Hope you guys are doing well and look forward to seeing you for our Goodbyeto Trinidad party.

Last Day

It felt really good to drop off boxes of contracts, hand in my badge, office key and cell phone. Last night I worked super late to complete all the projects I promised I'd complete. As I drove off and onto the highway, I realized that I am someone who cares about my words. Although I had some rough times there, I wanted to leave on a positive note, I wanted to make sure they regretted letting me get away. The sweetest revenge is success. I may meet these people again, the telecom world is small.

It also felt wonderful how many connections I'd made with vendors. So many of them responded to my farewell email. I really am glad to have left Symantec. The place felt too cold, very business and little relationship building.

This evening, Rachel, Aesha and I sat shiva for Tikva. I watched Dave and Gal as they opened their home. I didn't have many words for them, I didn't know how to express the grief they must be feeling. I could only imagine if anything happened to Aesha....how devastated I'd be. How does one recover from such a thing? I guess if you had faith that death is not the end, but only another level. I'm not sure how I feel about death. The science behind how our bodies work doesn't allow any room to explain the soul. Every once in awhile, I do question whether we just stop existing when we do. Do the lights just extinguish? Then I look at a corpse and see the difference between what is just flesh and what we have, so much more.

So I have two weeks before starting my new position at Gap. Already, my schedule is full with friends to visit that I haven't seen, and a list of things to complete. It's good that we have that week at burningman to do nothing but enjoy each other, our friends, our lives.

Sending Strenghth to Tikva Ahava Spinrad

I have been extremely touched by Gal and Dave Spinrad's blogs www.growinginside.blogspot.com. They have been so generous sharing their process and feelings. Their daughter, Tikva, is having a difficult time. As a mother, I can only imagine what they are going through and how courageous they are. Our family is concentrating our energy and sending them to Tikva.

End of July

It's not official yet until I turn in my notice and receive confirmation on my background check - which will happen simultaneously. But I did orally accept a new position, at Gap, Inc. last Thursday. It was more than a relief. I've been feeling light and airy since. Pay is about the same with a signing bonus, but the culture and team I'll be working with is more my style - family oriented. Already, I've received "welcome aboards" and "congrats" from my boss and the VP of our group. I'm itching to hand in my resignation letter but will have to wait until Monday.

I'll start after Labor Day - and will have 2 weeks in between for a little R&R. My birthday lands during that week off, as well as Burningman!

This weekend, the family is heading up to Humboldt for AG's 20 year high school reunion. He's both excited and nervous. I'm very interested. We are hoping to leave tomorrow night so the pups and Aesha can sleep through the drive and AG doens't deal with traffic. Friday evening will be cocktails, Saturday there is a BBQ and kids playdate in the Park. In the evening, there is dinner and dancing... whoohoo, just like in highschool. I can't wait to get liquored up. Then Sunday we head home.

Update on the little monster: this week I have been putting Aesha down while drowsy so she can learn to soothe herself to sleep. The first night, she wailed for 15-20 minutes, stopping intermittenly to determine if anyone was coming to her call. I was peaking through the doorway to make sure she would be alright. She scaled all four sides of the crib, looking for a way out. Finally, after exhaughsting herself, she slept slumped over. 2 hours later, she woke up and we put her in bed with us. The 2nd night, she had already realized I wasn't coming, but did attempt to howl for 10 minutes before finding a comfortable position to lean back against the crib, falling asleep sitting upright. AG went in and laid her down. Again, she woke up after 1.5 hours. I nursed her for 5 minutes, then put her down again. This time, she fell asleep while I rubbed her tummy. After another 1.5 hours, she woke up again and we brought her to bed. Baby steps, baby steps. I wonder how long it will take her tonight....

Gorgeous Portland

Last night, instead of taking a train to Portland as originally planned, my mom and Mr. T graciously offered to drive us. They had both taken the day off prior to spend as much time with Aesha and I think my mom gets more hooked each time she sees her. So she wanted to spend as much time, being near her, even Aesha is spooked sometimes by my mom's obsession with her. By the time we reached Portland, my mom felt some validation as a grandmother when Aesha clung to her. As we sat down for a late dinne

r, Aesha the star appeared. She flirted with Grandpa Al all night and was wired - screeching, hollering and jumping up and down in glee when Grandma Chris brought out a little rag doll that has become part of the doll house for Aesha. My parents had a very difficult time leaving Aesha, but eventually they did. I finally pinned Aesha down, turned off all the lights and she eventually drifted to sleep after much excited mumbling.

This morning Aesha surprised me. She has been very happy hanging out with Grandpa Al, no reaching out for me, as if the attachment phase did not happen. That is a great sign. I was worried that she would require attention from me today - my working day. I'm logged in at Starbucks a couple of blocks from the house since I was unable to jump onto any wireless access. These last several days have been wonderful. With the wonderful weather and me spending time with Aesha, it feels very much like a vacation for us. Actually, I would love to lead a life where Aesha, AG and I travel around, enjoy life, friends/families and work from our laptop when we needed. This week is manifesting itself as how I would like it to be.

It's also beautiful here, a little more humid, but I'm a huge fan of warm weather so I won't complain. I enjoyed a rice krispey square with a cup of coffee for breakfast and would sure love to take a walk around the area and not work. We are both missing AG a ton, but so far, this has been a wonderful trip for Aesha and I. I love hanging out with her, she's my best friend. I hope to continue to foster this type of relationship with her; that she'll want to travel and see things with me, talk to me about what she enjoys, what she likes or dislikes, her experiences. I am so excited to hear what she's got to say, she's been saying a hellofalot and I wish I could understand it all.

Seattle - A sparkly jewel

Aesha and I flew out Friday night for Seattle. She is the best travel buddy. We got to the airport and wouldn't you know, the one time I didn't bring her birth certificate (because the last 3 times we brought it, no one bothered to ask), the guy asks me. Of course he let me off this time...

We made it through security - but it was a little hectic with Aesha in the Ergo, my backpack with my laptop, taking off my shoes and jacket, all while holding onto Aesha, my driver's license & boarding pass. It was even trickier putting everything back on, but somehow I managed. We got to our gate and I let her loose on the carpet. She is intent on using her newfound crawling skills. By the time we boarded and were seated, she was ready to pass out. It was 9:30pm and past her bedtime. She slept the entire flight. while we were descending I placed her back into the ergo and she slept through the landing and all the airport announcements as I got to baggage claims. Mr. T was waiting for us. She even slept through me installing her car seat, getting her in the car seat and driving all the way home. She actually didn't wake up except for the few times in the night to continue nursing. In the morning, my mom scooped her up and hijacked her into their room. It didn't take but a minute before little Ms. Aesha let it be known, she wasn't having it. My mom returned her to me within 5 minutes.

But of course I was already awake, it was our usual 6:30am wakeup time. At noon, people began arriving and the BBQ began. That was when I noticed that Aesha's 2nd tooth barely peeking out from the gums! Whoohoo. Her first one came in two months ago and the 2nd one is right next door. I've been waiting for the rest of her teeth to come in since she's been working the first one to death.

It was a scorcher - 87 degrees in the shade. I ate mostly watermelon for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Aesha and I had walked around my mom's yard all day. I wanted to show her the brilliant reds in the tiger lillies, and to touch and smell the white and orange roses. Seattle is gorgeous when it's sunny and hot. The sky was clear blue and I could see the white peaked mountains. Aesha loved sitting on the grass as she touched each blade. With all the flowers blooming and the trees and grass so green, and the sky so clear with no clouds, Seattle was like a sparkly buffed diamond.

Today Aesha and I have been hanging out on the deck, smelling the flowers, listening to wind chimes, playing in the water fountain and waiting for small breezy drafts to cool us down. I was nostalgic for all the summer days in Longview and Seattle when I had the time to lay in the grass and listen to the lawn mower or a plane in the distance. I even ate a cream puff... someone stop me... I'm going for another....

Earlier, we met up with Loan and Rob. It was great to see them and catch up on gossip about the people we both knew. I wasn't ready to head back home yet, so we stopped in the mall. I bought a couple of dresses, but generally am ready to implement a workout regime. I've been waiting for little Miss Sunshine to get tired so I can take a nap, but she's happily munching on a carrot and talking to all her toys. Tomorrow evening we head to Portland.

9 Month check up - new stats

So we have the new stats for Aesha's 9 month checkup. She is 16lbs and 1 ounce and she is 27 inches long. We have a new doctor, Dr. Treece, who AG and I like very much. He didn't push immunization at all and assumed when I said she wasn't getting any shots today that I had a separate immunization schedule for her. Then he was talking TO Aesha which I really liked, and got down to her level while she was on my lap.

Although she is in the 10% in weight, Dr. Treece believes she's fine since her height and head circumference is good. He was also very impressed with her vocalizations since Aesha had a lot to say. Per Dr. Treece, she is very advanced in this area. Of course I am feeling sheepishly proud of this fact. He did request that we do a blood sample on Aesha just to check whether she is anemic and whether she's been exposed to any lead poisoning. AG and I took her afterwards to get some bloodwork, but the nurse there was terrible. First she pronounced Aesha's name incorrectly (which I don't mind) but when I corrected her she said (under her breath) that it didn't matter. I didn't catch this until later. That should have been a first clue. Then she stuck Aesha 5-6 times because she couldn't find a vein. It was terrible, and she didn't show any emotion about it at all when Aesha was crying. Finally, AG told her to stop and that we'd come back another time. We did not like this woman. I was steaming mad after we left. Next time, I won't have a problem requesting someone different immediately if they say that my baby's name doesn't matter!

Last night, Uncle Dave flew into town for an Aikido tournament or something rather. This morning, I had some time to catch up with him while he tried to charm Aesha. We spent a lovely afternoon chatting for a bit before he left for his Aikido.

Tomorrow Aesha and I fly to Seattle for my mom's 60th birthday and Monday we will take the Amtrak down to Portland to visit my dad who hasn't seen her since November. I'm excited for them to see her. The other exciting news is that my sister is 5 weeks pregnant. Exciting because now my mom will have another grandchild to spoil. I'm very excited for them, I know they've been trying for quite some time.

The 4 legged creature has emerged

Friday night, AG took over while I attended a seminar with Padma after work in the south bay. It's a seminar on "How to Get out of your Box." Mark Johnson, my VP at Veritas is hosting this new company. He's quite an interesting character and there's much to learn from him, regardless of the form he provides it in. As part of the reading, "How to Talk to Yourself When you Talk to Yourself," I'm realizing that we have all been programmed so frequently on what we can't do, we have been limited and boxed in on what we can do. It's also making me aware of how I want to speak to Aesha.

Saturday we hung out for a bit and by 1pm, AG's friends came into town. It was 91 degrees in the city, and like her father, Aesha does not fare well in the heat. She was tired, hungry and cranky. The heat suppressed her appetite, but she was still hungry, which was frustrating for her. By the end of the day, she and I were exhausted and I took her to bed with me at 10pm. Sunday morning we all went out for a walk to Philz Coffee before AG's friends left town. Then we put Aesha on the floor and away she went... she's definitely crawling now. No longer doing the stomache shuffle, the "rocking horse", nor the back-herself-into-the-corner crawl. She's moving and this is the beginning of a new era for us all. The first thing she went for was the dog food and AG had to sprint to catch her in time before she took a handful. Then I scattered trinkets down the hallway to entice her. She made it with lots of grunts and smiles.

She had so much energy the entire day - we didn't know what was happening. By 9pm, she was crawling all over us in bed and wouldn't stay still. I thought I had caused some brain damage by allowing her to watch some tv earlier, and was relieved to hear from Ven that Jeven had the same thing happen on his first few days of learning to crawl. They are just so excited to be moving about on their own that they can't stop. Finally, I held Aesha down, cuddled in my bed with the lights off and no distractions. She drifted off to sleep mumbling by 9:30pm. She slept all night and even this morning, I had to wake her up to drop her off at daycare. I can't wait to see what she does next.

9 months

As of Sunday, Aesha is 9 months. There's a big shift occurring in her. She's eating food 90% of the time and only nursing 10% - usually in the mornings or at night when she needs comfort and liquids - since she's very much like me and doesn't enjoy water. I'm working on making water a habit.

So far she's loving everything, especially steamed carrots and zuchini. Yesterday I boiled some purple potatoes for her and she loved it. In her food repertoire we also have organic eggs (steamed) and today I included bits of tender chicken from my homemade chicken veggie soup (I had made for AG). Hoping to get an update on that this afternoon. I added a big chunk of sweet potatoe and lots of these squirly little pastas made out of veggies (from Trader Joe's). She and I went shopping at Wholefoods yesterday and also grabbed some organic red grapes. She gobbles these down as well. I also bought organic lentils which I'll try to make tonight or tomorrow night. Her favorite new game is to spit out everything I put in her mouth and then play with it.

Last night, while AG was working late, I tried to let her put herself to sleep. She lay wailing for over an hour, grabbing her ears, writhing in emotional agony and making herself hoarse. I picked her up once just to check her diapers. Eventually, I could not handle it and held her for awhile... She was still sobbing and holding on tight. Then I nursed her and put her back down. At this point she was too tired to struggle much. I also leaned over the crib and put my head on her chest so she could smell me even in her sleep. She passed out almost immediately, but it took me another 5 mintues to untangle her fingers from my hair.

She slept until midnight and then I brought her into the bed with me and we snuggled until AG came home at 6:30 this morning from work. Am missing her very much today. All of a sudden, I'm feeling as if her babyhood is almost gone and part of me wants to selfishly hold on to that for as long as I can. Seeing pictures of Tikva, so small, so vulnerable, made me nostalgic for those times ... www.growinginside.blogspot.com. Babies are wonderful in that way, they make you forget about everything and remind you what is important about life. Yes, the job pays the bills and we are always trying to catch up on bills...but it's the little beating hearts and the gummy smiles that makes our hearts melt and turn mushy - it's like falling in love, every day.

Friday 13th

Too bad this day gets such a bad rep. My Friday has been great even though AG and I have had 3 nights of very little sleep. Our little princess is yes, sick again. This is the 7th time in 7 months and I'm not counting. I know in the end it's good for her immune system to get the workout, but it's killing her parents. Anyways, after a good hot shower and some time with my caffeine buddy, I'm ready to take down the world; or until 8pm whichever occurs first.

Aesha is still in her "Attachment" to me phase. However, if we keep her distracted (with anything) she will forget for a period of time. The other place she is very happy to be at, thankfully, is at her daycare. They truly miss her and when I drop her off, she is so happy, she forgets that I'm leaving. She's only cried once when I left her that, last week when she wasn't feeling great. I had a great revelation driving to work this morning after dropping her off at daycare. I used to feel guilty that I didn't see her for almost 12 hours on M, W and Fridays. But now, I realize, this is her time, this daycare; where she can be stimulated by someone other than AG and I. She's actually happy to be there and there's no reason for me to feel guilty, and that took a load off.

If it weren't for the "going to bed" tantrums every night where she fights us both one tooth and ten nails, she'd be the happiest baby on the block. Oh yes, she is so close to crawling. On her hands and knees often, rocking back and forth but always falling back down... she'll get it soon, and then we'll wished she hadn't.

Life is amazing ---

Remembering a Beatuiful Black Man

Sunday, AG and Aesha went with me to remember a beautiful man. I met Otto almost 9 years ago. As a matter of fact, I remember the exact day we met, even the exact circumstances. I was hanging out with an ex (Nigel) - it was July 14th 1999 at the French Bastille party downtown. In comes this huge beautiful black man. The Bastille party is held every year in SF between two alleyways and it is completely filled, bodies to sweating bodies. Otto is not an easy guy to miss. Somehow, he got my number and said he'd call to hang out. A couple of weeks later, I run into Otto at a club - and he swoops in for a huge kiss. Later that night he called and we talked from 3am to 6am. He was trying to persuade me to leave my Sausalito pad to come into the city and hang out with him, he was even willing to come pick me up. But it didn't happen, I was too tired. But we talked for hours that night, about his travels, trips to Africa, I loved his spirit.

We hung out several more times, a trip to Tahoe.... Otto and I became friends. I'd see him out of the blue at BM. The first night with AG, on our way home, we ran into Otto at the dome, me in my tag-raggled blonde afro-wig, pedaling with one foot on my bike, the other dragging on the ground. AG still remembers that meeting. The next year, AG and I are taking a shower at camp, and who comes biking down the dirt road to say hi to me while I'm butt naked, Otto. And all the times I'd see him at Power to the Peaceful passing out flyers for the after party that benefited SF children.

8 months ago, Otto was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer - and I really really believed if anyone could beat it, he could. His spirit is so dominatingly bright, he had so much love from so many people. He was courageous - he blogged about his experience online www.ottoschutt.com. But due to complications, Otto died last week. I have been mourning the loss of such a beautiful man and bright light and remembering him all week. AG says that perhaps the people who shine the brightest, burn out faster, or perhaps (I like this version better), Otto was needed elsewhere.

I have not had to deal with death this close before. Otto's death has made me believe that there must be another plane of existence. I can't imagine that something/someone so beautiful as Otto - so happy and full of life, would just extinguish, as if not existing at all. I can't explain it, out of nowhere, I just believed that there must be....I used to be so afraid of death. The fear stems from the finality and not believing that there is another existence, being away from those you love.

At his memorial on Sunday - we contributed a succulant to plant in his garden. His love, Indra, is so beautiful and bright herself. I watched as his father dug into the ground and I couldn't imagine the pain of having to bury your child. The community that held him that day were all beautiful people. Aesha was too sick for us to continue the memorial, but everyone walked to Twin Peaks to scatter his ashes over SF, the beautiful city he loved. There are tons of pictures of Otto on flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/ottoschutt/pool/. I found these two pictures of us at one of Otto's birthday party his friends threw for him. He was such a beautiful spirit, and made a huge impact on all who knew him; I hope that they need him more where he has gone....

Girl's night

Last night, on a whim, I had Elaine, Manisha and Elida over for dinner. I hadn't seen Manisha and Elida for months, and Elaine and I hadn't spoken for over a week. I missed them. My weekdays are spent working too hard and the last several weekends AG and I have been trying to get the house in order and traveling to see family.

It was nice to have the girls swing by impromptu. Easy dinner of salmon, some lemon drop drinks by Elaine and lots of wine, and dessert from Trader Joe's paired with nice conversation. AG and I have been getting Aesha on a sleep routine, but the last two days we've gone a step further by trying to get her to soothe herself to sleep without much assistance from us. It hasn't gone that well as she screamed for 45 minutes each night. We sit there, letting her know we love her and that we're there. Last night, she fell asleep in the middle of a scream. I almost laughed as I watched her, but I was too tired. Her screams can put raise the hair on the back of my head. I'm sure it wasn't too pleasant for the girls either to listen. Breaks my heart, but we really need to get her to the next level of sleeping. Tomorrow she and I fly to AZ while AG flies to NYC. I hate breaking up her routine, especially since we've just started a new twist, but we'll do what we can.

Point of the story, I miss hanging out with the girls and it was nice to see them. Can't wait for Aesha to have her friends come over and watch her with her girlfriends.

Gorgeous weekend

This weekend was hot and gorgeous (in the 80's). Friday night - came home and AG and I hung out watching tv for 15 minutes. I was so tired from my week - 2 days of training in south bay and a very long but awesome interview in Campbell - even further south than MV. So in total, I traveled to the south bay all 5 days last week. By Friday evening I was pooped. At 9:30pm, while putting Aesha back to sleep - I fell asleep myself. Rocking Friday evening.

Saturday morning - 4:30am - Aesha woke us up, what a doll, and talked to herself for a good 10 minutes. When neither AG nor I responded (we were just too exhausted), she eventually fell asleep and woke up again at 6:30am. This time, she was up. So AG and I got up, made coffee, had a leisure morning before she caught her first nap at 8:30. We worked on the house all day and even had time to go shopping at WholeFoods. AG and I loved the sampling of cheeses and chocolates. And everywhere we went, people loved Aesha. We got home and continued working on the house. I sifted through tons of clothes - and managed to pull out 4 bags to give to goodwill. Next on my list is the shoe rack.

By 7:30pm, we took a break and headed to Andy and Allison's for dinner and catchup. Aesha did not sleep the entire time we were there. She finally managed to conk out at 10:30pm. We paid for it the next day. Andy's place is in the Sunset district - 42nd right off Geary. Beautiful and serene. We ordered Curry Pizza and had lots of laughs. We miss them - such good people.

Sunday morning - up again at 4:30 our little girl. We woke up with her at 6:30am. AG and I worked on the house some more while she napped and we even had some crazy entertainment in front of our house. At around 8:30am, some guy driving down the street sideswiped 2 parked cars. We watched him get out of the car, check for damages and slowly walked away from the scene. AG called the police and the owner of one of the wrecked cars came out with a bat in his hand. Within minutes we saw a young lady in the car - the driver left her there. He must not have had insurance or been a legal citizen. The entire scene was crazy.

Back to work we went - then because we had so much work completed, we took a break and headed to Kerry's for brunch. It was too beautiful outside, I didn't want to be inside all day. It was brunch with lots of bacon and 2 beautiful girls (one a previous vegan and the other going down that path), chomping on opposite ends of a bacon strip. Oh how Andy would have loved that scene. I had one too many mimosa's and we headed back home. Finished ironing all my clothes, and hung them up. Aesha and I took a ride to visit Shelaine, then to Trader Joe's for a quick run. Aesha had a melt down by that point and back home we went. When she finally went to bed - I cleaned up her room and now our house feels awesome. Not quite done yet. We are still figuring out the downstairs/office and there's still too much furniture upstairs. But for now, it's quite livable, and actually even nice. We are almost ready for guests. However, this weekend we leave for Humboldt to visit GM Karen and next weekend to AZ. Hopefully the first or 2nd weekend in May, we'll have people over!

Aesha is sick with her 4th cold. I sure hope all of this is building up her immune system.

2008 Is going to be a fantastic year

I have a feeling that 2008 will be a great year. It's taken 6 months for Aesha's lucky golden pig energy to kick in, but I'm feeling something. As some people know, I've been interviewing since the beginning of the year - here and there - and there's been some interesting possibilities, but either the salary wasn't commenserate to my current situation or they wouldn't let me telecommute. My ideal position would be in the city making the same or more than my current position. I had several offers, and it was difficult for me to stick to my goals because I want out of my current position so badlly somedays. But having a family now that depends upon my income and my time, I couldn't take something less than what I set out to get. It's been a long time, 4 going on 5 months and now there appears to be some possibilities shaping up that I'm very excited about.

Anyways, I can't talk too much more about it since there's still interviews and things to go through but I wanted to be able to post it here, to talk about something that's super positive in my career life. If I get this position, I'll be making more AND working in the city. I guess the moral of the story is to hold out for what you want, don't settle. I'm a huge proponent of this moral in my personal life, but have settled a lot in my career due to financial needs. I've gritted my teeth so many times at work - wanting to hand in my resignation, but it feels good to hold out for a hero.... heehee.

That's working life - super busy and emotionally draining. On the home front - it's quite blissful. Coming home from work and picking up our little monster really does make my day. I completely forget about work quickly as I feed her and prepare her bath then AG puts her to sleep. Then we have some adult time - watching tv and vegging out mostly. We are too tired to do much else during the week. The weekends, we have been working on the house - it's coming together. Aesha's bedroom is almost complete and we've been having her sleep the first part of the night in her room, until she wakes up - then she comes into our bed. I have never spent so much time with one person and we never argue - AG is an amazing partner.

Next weekend we drive to Humboldt to visit GM Karen and I am hoping to get much needed rest. The following week, Aesha and I fly to Arizona to visit my sister and my mom who's flying in while AG flies to NYC for work. Before you know it, it's May and we are almost halfway through the year.

Oh yes, Aesha is sitting up on her own now - minutes at a time, but strong. She babbles to herself constantly and loves sitting in her walker, facing the window and watching people go by. She loves things on strings, and tags as well. Her current favorite toy is my work badge. Last night she was so tired, she was cranky and crying while I was feeding her. I continued to feed her and she continued to eat and cry at the same time, which I find amusing. And we've hung up the jumper on our door frames and she's having a blast jumping in it. I wouldn't be surprised if she starts crawling soon - she's a go getter and likes to move around.

I hope next time I post, it will be confirming positive news... until then...

A fresh start

Andy moved out last weekend and Uncle Dave left Saturday, which left us to ourselves for the first time. AG and I took Aesha out for a long beautiful drive to Laytonville in Mendocino county to meet his high school friends. The drive was gorgeous and Aesha was for once very accommodating in the car. She talked to her little stuffed friends for a couple of hours and then fell asleep an hour before we arrived. I watched the miles of rolling green hills and beautiful California wildflowers.

Sunday morning we debated about whether to take Aesha out to Dolores Park for the Easter egg hunt or to try working on the house. We opted for the latter. Next Easter, Aesha will be much more excited about the egg hunts. We spent all day moving our bedroom from downstairs to upstairs. We took things slowly, enjoying each stage and re-strategizing about where each furniture should be. Since moving into this place, we've never slept upstairs. I love having the bedroom in the back. Although we could hear more outdoor activity and noise, it's pleasant to wake up to a beautiful sunny backyard. By 6pm, we had only completed moving the bed and dressers upstairs. The office and Aesha's room will be worked on through the week. We ordered pizza and watched the Warriors beat some Laker Ass. That was fun!

It's the last full week of March and then we head into April. Can't believe it. Time is passing too quickly. Already we're getting a sense of enjoyment rearranging the house. I can't wait for it to be finished. Then we can work on the back yard ;).

Big shout out to XT who passed her exams and has a new job. So proud of her for studying her ass off and making her dreams into reality. It's inspiring to watch friends obtain their dreams. Thinking of you XT, will call you soon.

Life is wonderful.....
