Xmas 2005 in Portland - and Seattle

Left Wednesday evening at around 8pm. AG spent all day moving stuff out of the loft in preparation for handing the keys over. He finished at 3pm, just in time for a 45 minute rest and then to Big-O-Tires to find chains just in case we run into snow and sleet. Got home and began the arduous task of final packing hell.

But we got out. I drove most of the way and the pups were so great. They whined a bit when we stopped for gas but like AG, slept the entire time. If it wasn't for the hydroplaning which required astute attention span and rigid hands on the wheel, which locked up some muscle tension in my back... I could have driven the entire way. But as it was, by 5am, my body couldn't take it anymore and AG took over for the last 30 minutes of the trip. His parents were up by the time we got there at 6am. I could barely keep my eyes open - took a shower when I got there, to give me enough energy to have a 15 minute conversation with the parents before I passed out.

Slept a lot Thursday, we were both tired and a little bit grumpy with the pups.. who were excited about new smells and such and wanted to go outside to play. Spent much of Thursday and Friday catching up on sleep, hanging out with folks, and making rounds to the nearest mall in preparation for Xmas. By Saturday we started to feel normal again. AG's mom flew in then and helped out with the pups. I think both Sienna and Lila really like being outdoor dogs in the Northwest - not in the city. They loved their daily walks with Grandma - it was nice watching them all fight over walking duties, of which I was more than happy to relinquish....heehee, I'm such a good mom.

We left Monday morning and headed to Seattle. Met up with Krissy & Chen, Noy and Ashley. Brought me back to high school days and I went back into character; boisterous, loud, demanding bully. Well sort of. I've changed quite a bit since then, but somehow when you are back with the people you grew up with, it brings back certain behaviors and habits. Was interesting to see that about myself.

Stopped over in Mt. Lake Terrace to drop off the little ones at Vannessa's. What a crazy household. George (aka Monster) is still huge (if not even bigger) and quite lovable. Daisy (aka Lucy), the middle child, is such a sweetheart. And then there is princess Ganema (sp?) - Vannessa's favored child. It was a frantic household with everyone trying to smell Sienna and Lila, particularly Gabrielle. After an hour of relentless barking, butt smelling, tail-wagging and frantic weiner bodies running all over the place - everyone started to settle a little bit. AG and I snuck out.

Dinner at our household was much different than at the Gluck's. Where soft voices and respectful requests were in stark contrast to high pitched demands and noisy confusion and chatter. All the kids were at home with their significant others, excluding Hung. It was entertaining that my mom noted how sweet her daughter's partners were and how sorry for them she felt meeting us girls. As if she didn't have a hand in the development of our personalities; and that her relationship with Mr. T mirrors all of ours. Blind blind blind.

I don't have a problem with that. We're strong women, we grew up with an even stronger presence. I love that about my mom. My strength is my own, as I believe that each person's character is more nature than nurture - but her influence is powerful. Kinda reminds me of our puppies' characters. George, Ganema and Daisy are all hearty - each with their own strengths. But Vannessa's approach to raising them as unpampered pets has made my two dogs look like wimps. Being with their siblings will toughen them a bit and they are already showing blossoming signs innate toughness that's been dormant. Scares me a little. I don't want pampered children - how to find that balance of giving them roots as well as wings, harumph!

Tonight we'll meet up with Sashily for dinner and drinks and tomorrow night to see Krissy & Chen's new home. And then Thursday morning, back to Portland to spend one last evening with the Glucks before we make our way home.

Prepping for Xmas-Trip 2005

It's 12:49am and we're packing for our big family xmas trip. Tentative plans are to shianghai the puppies and hijack outta here by 9pm and drive through sleet, rain, and snow to Portland and sleep for a day. Grandma Gluck is going to be very happy to see her little darlings; who are both ladies now. I'm happy not to be working or even thinking of working for 10 days. AG is happy that the sale of his loft is going through by Friday. They are scheduled to meet the title company tomorrow to sign paperwork. It's nice to have his previous life-things tied up nicely before the new year.

Feels so weird how normal it is to pack up to drive and see the family. Wasn't too long ago when I was only day dreaming about such things. I have a feeling this is going to be a nice holiday. Packed full of course, never a dull moment with my party planning. Many people to see. It's pretty cool that I like his family.

Got Milk?

This is one of Lila's common faces - not sure what it means. Maybe it's her "what are you doing?" look. Sometimes they just sit and stare intensly at me until I allow them to sleep on my lap while watching TV. It's a little unnerving and difficult to ignore. Posted by Picasa

Chef AG - Tante Marie's Cooking School

This is the first (and probably the only time) I'll get to see him in an apron. I was hoping he'd have such a great time, he'd want to do it more often.... sigh... there is always hope. Posted by Picasa

Had to include the other half - she's quite an important part of the formula. Hate the program on this which only allows one to blog one picture at a time.. perhaps it is time to move to another platform...

Halloween 2005

Hamming it up with the cwazy Russian. Sashilya said something awesome to me that night. When they were in Vietnam, they had missed their train and ended up going to Halong Bay on a different schedule than planned. At first she was bummed out about it, and couldn't figure out why she was staying. Then after we met, Michelle told her..."you were meant to stay..." There are some things in life that happens so you can meet the people who are supposed to change the course of your life. These guys have totally changed ours. We'll be visiting them soon... watch out Seattle. Posted by Picasa

Tante Marie's Cooking School

Last night we attended a Qwest holiday event at Tante Marie's house, owner of Tante Marie's cooking school http://www.tantemarie.com/. What a beautiful victorian house, an inspiration. I love my condo - it's practical - spacious and modern. But if I had money to restore one of these beautiful victorians..... Of course the kitchen was fantastic (pictures will be posted). The upper kitchen had a long butcher block island with a stove inserted (see picture in the website, that's her kitchen). Great area for cutting and dicing. Right behind was another stove.

The lower kitchen was smaller and for baking. Of course, it's about the normal size of most SF kitchens... Mine's a little larger, but only a smidgeon. 34 people present, most of them either Qwest executives or their premiere customers. I probably made it on the list because of a $1.4M overcharge and because Qwest is intent on soliciting more deals. We sat next to the CEO of Cadence - nice guy, but he was dropping names like we were execs ourselves. I find that funny. Bragging is a characteristic I identify with insecurity.

Faye and I chose to make chocolate cake with raspberry and medallion chocolates. I'm not much of a baker, mostly because I don't enjoy cakes and find them over-indulgent - but I enjoy the creativity of it. AG went to make potatoe gratin. I think he had a great time chatting with Qwest's marketing director who organized the event. While we were chatting, drinking wine, and making food, the groups that finished began serving their creations. Appetizers included artichoke and fresh crab (I have a new appreciation for artichokes) and also some divine mushroom h'orsdoevers. The main course consisted of a beautiful salmon and caviar salad, seared sirloin medallion steaks and potatoe gratin. And of course dessert - chocolate cake with raspberries, freshed whipped cream and a sprig of mint. We served the chocolate medallions with coffee. As a parting gift, I received a bottle of Cakebread (oh my, one of my favorites), and a box of See's candy.

This has to be one of my favorite vendor events. It was creative, interactive and really fun. On top of the wonderful food and fun conversations, all the proceeds of the event went towards Tante's nonprofit - to provide food to the hungry. She hosts approximately 35 of these events at her home annually to fund her nonprofit.

I did get liquored up nicely - and left just in time, before I got sloppy or passed out. Poor AG - I woke up this morning not remembering how I got into bed. Of course I passed out wearing my party attire.

Saha's 2nd anniversay and a Numinosum reunion

Sapna and I attended Saha's 2nd anniversay this evening at 1075 Sutter, a quaint and adorable little middle eastern restaurant in Hotel Carleton in the tenderloin. AG and I camped with the owner, Muhammod, with our Numinosum camp. Best food at BM ever. Not that I want ramble on and on again about how wonderful our camp was, but it sure has opened up some new doors for us. Scrumptious appetizers (stuffed mushrooms, sauteed mushrooms and tofu, braised chicken wings with spicy sauces), belly dancers, great live music. And best of all, some of our Numinosum buddies were there.

Finally caught up with Salim, Thomas, and Brimeeza. It would be nice to connect the russians with Salim and Nyphesa. Adorable couple. I think even Sapna had a good time for once. The music was fantastic, I almost couldn't leave....but there were little ones waiting for me at home, and with a present too. Oh well... life of a parent.

Tramster

Sunday was Tramster's Bridal Shower (pictures to be posted later). She's part of my Asian constituency here in the bay area. We met through LanChau when I was working at SBC, back in the day, and I do believe they were the first friends I made here. Everywhere I go, I have my partying friends and I have my Asian girl friends that I go to when I need some culture and grounding. It's a completely different community and they are integral to my sanity and development.

My life is incomplete without them. There is sense of cultural understanding that is difficult to explain which I've had with my Asian friends everywhere. You can't teach someone to pick up these things, it's part of the culture. There's been little or no strife with them; there is no sense of undermining or second guessing the other. If there is a misunderstanding, we generally assume the best of the other's intentions. I really appreciate that quality.

Mundane and Enjoying It

AG and I at Warriors vs. Utah JazzFriday night AG and I went to our 2nd Warriors game. Without Baron Davis playing, the game was half ass. Though the Warriors didn't lose by much, the excitement that Baron brings to these games is missing. Afterwards, went to Shelaine's and had lots of laughs watching AG help Sion set up his automatic signatures on his email. It took them about an hour since they were medicated.

Saturday - met up with KC and Mie for an afternoon brunch. The theme for this week will be "Catching up with the girls." Went to an Indian restaurant that was very cool - Maharani - the owner is known for setting up the first Indian restaurant in SF at 1122 Post Street. They have a very romantic area in the back called their Fantasy Room with Moroccan-like tables, where couples can sit on the floor in sectional rooms with drapes for intimacy. The food was absolutely awesome. Posted by Picasa

Coolest wedding cake....

Friends (the Yagunama's aka Dav/Mie) - got married at BM this year and had their reception when we were in SD. I finally saw their pictures and thought this was the coolest wedding cake ever. It looks like it came out of the Cat in the Hat.... and of course, it has the BM symbol! Congrats to Dav/Mie. Posted by Picasa

Daddy's Little Girl

I love getting updated pictures of Aliya - maybe someday she'll get to read my blogs and see through my eyes how I've watched her grow up.

Improved outfit from last update. Not that I have anything against pink. I know how limited her wardrobe choices are at the moment. But someday, I'm hoping to help her find her style, whatever that is. Hm, I'm thinking brown and turquoise...

Although I miss her shell-shocked expressions (since they remind me so much of her father) this is such an adorable picture. Way to go daddy! Posted by Picasa

Basketball Basketball - Warriors' Opening Night

AG and I are seriously involved with a new passion - basketball. It's my favorite professional sport to watch and I'm guilty of going to the Warriors game in the past years to watch other teams besides the Warriors. You can't really blame me, they were dead last for several years. Last year, Baron Davis joined the Warriors and changed everything. He brought leadership, a sense of pride, and team-work to the fallen Warriors. AG and I went to several games, including the last game. What an amazing game that was. Not only were they winning, but Baron infused excitement, panache, and great basketball to our court.

So all summer, I was tortured on the decision to purchase season tickets. But I did, and tonight is the season opener. We are like little kids waiting for Christmas. I even agreed to be his assistant for the fantasy basketball team - named - the Mission Misfits. And we've made a pact, that if the Warriors make it to the play-offs (which hasn't happened for 12 years), we'd paint our faces orange and blue to support our team. Can life get any better?

A Perfect Weekend - Halloween and all

FRIDAY: Good meals/Good Friends
As it would turn out, this weekend was fun, impromptu and absolutely perfect. XT and Chris came over for dinner Friday evening. It was our first time meeting him and I could tell XT was with someone who abosolutely adored her. I can't tell you how happy I was for both of them. I haven't seen that soft side of her in a long time, and it made her all the more beautiful. Chris cooked us his special tri tip steaks and we were enamored immediately, since most of my friends know what a meat eater I am. He's down to earth, gave XT plenty of space but with lots of attention, you could tell he was very much in love with her. The half of Shelaine as well as Sapna joined. It was a great evening of old friends, new friends and a great meal.

Saturday: Partying it up!
Thank goodness we had the house to ourselves. Both roommates were gone and we took much luxury in lounging in the living room in our PJ's and watching tv and napping all day. We finally got our lazy selves off the couch at 7pm to take a shower and get ready for the evening.. only b/c AG's workmates were coming over for drinks at 9pm. They are an abosolutely lovely couple, very much in love, even after 4 years of marriage. I love that. After they left, we took our time getting ready to head out to Opel's Freaknight Halloween party at Paradies Lounge... and to meet up with our lost loves, Sashilya...and Michelle. The music varied, but at one point DJ Lorin was playing... I've forgotten how much I enjoy his music.

I hadn't realized what a club scene 11th and Folsom is. All along those blocks - several clubs all lined up in a row, whatever you wanted. People were out in all forms of dress and undress. It was like being on a clean street of BM - it was fantastic! I love it when people get freaky and wear things that reveal a little bit of their fantasies, and who they are or want to be. People think Halloween is a time they can hide behind costumes and masks, and yet, that's the one time I get to see normal people unmask themselves, it's like being able to look at piece of their soul, and it's so refreshing.

Margo and Maddick met us quickly inside - they were so cute and adorable, him in his Elvis outfit complete with 2 baggies of prescription pills and Margo in her little cat outfit. Much better done than most cat outfits I've seen, probably because of the fur lined paws... nice touch. I like them both a lot, they are non-invasive, super sweet and really chill.

And while I was lounging on a beautiful couch, who should come up behind me? none other than 1 crazy russian guy we met in Vietnam, complete in costume with his crazy russian fur hat and mustache. Perfect! We met his other half later, the dildo fairy - completely vibrating of course. Sashilya, what can I say, the more we hang out with them - the more we love them. They are fun to party with, yet responsible, and deeply spiritual and intellectual. They have the same philosophy and live their lives balancing the parting, being in love with each other, and being responsible that both AG and I adhere to - and there is a deep sense of connection with them. I adore them both individually, and yet, they are more than the sum of their parts when together. A rare find indeed. Ilya and I connected in Thailand with our love of mentos, and we are finding out every time we hang out, that we are definitly soul brothers. I mean the guy loves Salami too... Sasha is grounded, and deep and and quiet talks with her are intense and rejuvenating.

Sunday: lounging mood
We hung out until the club shut down at 4am (really 5am with the extra hour), drove everyone back to our place and hung out until 6am. We never did make it out to brunch with Sashilya, but we are hoping to see them for Xmas. Yesterday was a blur of napping and snacking. I did insist on going for a walk with the pups to get some fresh air. It felt good to move around and participate with the outside world. Our house is a mess from much partying and lounging, but I haven't felt this replenished spiritually in awhile......

Universal flow highway? Luck? Hard Work? Karma?

The weather has changed abruptly in the last two days and the first full rain of the season fell this morning around 6am. I only know that bc my cute little puppies woke me up 3 times last night to go to the bathroom. Finally, at 6am, I took their kennel and put it outside leaving the door open for convenience. And when big fat raindrops began splashing on our patio, I woke up to make sure the puppies were warm and dry before snuggling back into my comfortable bed next to AG.

Which got me thinking today about how lucky I am. I know life is a constant struggle, especially to find that special someone to snuggle with at night. I have many friends who are in relationships, all in various stages. One particular friend, who I thought surely had it figured out, only to find out differently. Makes me wonder, how and why I'm so lucky? Is it Karma, luck? At one point in time, I believed absolutely that we meet that special person when we've learned the lessons we've needed to, which then allows us to see the entrance onto that highway. I'm not so certain about that anymore. I've met people who are with their karmic/soul partner (my assumption of course) and they still have a lot of work left. And I have friends who have traversed the difficult path of self-understanding and change and should be on that highway. Doesn't make as much sense.

I'm rambling about this only because I'm feeling so guilty about having it so good. That's a huge rock that I carry about everything. But it's more apparent when my friends are going through difficult times. I know I can't make it better for them and that this lesson, like any lesson - is for them to go through and to learn from... but if only....

San Diego Baby

AG and I drove to SD Friday afternoon. Got into SD around 1am... Met up with my brother and Jess for brunch, then off to the rehearsal dinner in Carlsbad. I was in SD over a year ago when we drove Jess down in April to help her move into her new pad. I really didn't like SD that much then, and nothing has really changed my mind about it this time either. Weather is great usually, and I love the landscape - but the people.... I suppose there are worse places to live.

Gabrielle and Lourna's wedding was a hoot, we had a little assistance of coure. I can't imagine how dreary it could have been without. But they are sweet people, and I enjoyed meeting Jed (the Groom's brother), his friend Alexis, and Lourna. It was much different than Al's (or any of my friend's) wedding where so many friends and family participated and so much love shown. Gabrielle's wedding seemed a little bereft in the friends department even though there was a huge support shown in the family department.

AG and I got a lot of time in together and had lots of wonderful talks - which made the entire trip worth it by itself. And even though my life is mundane sometimes, it sure felt nice to sleep in my own bed, and enjoy the comforts and luxury of my own house.

Finally Catching up

Well, it's been over a month and a half since BM, and I'm finally almost caught up. The house is under control, and I'm just beginning to see the end of many projects at work. It's a great feeling of satisfaction and content. Not only because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but because I kicked ass getting there. Even the puppies are getting into a rhythm.

What's next on my agenda now that I'm not using all of my time to stomp out fires? Stil lots of soul searching to do and preparing for my next career move. Tramster's wedding is next month and the holidays are here already. Life is pretty damn good and I'm invigorated.

The Gang goes to the Supper Club

A couple of weeks ago, the Gang went to the Supper Club www.supperclub.nl, owned by ShElaine's friends and company. For $60 - you get a 5 course prefixed meal and lively entertainment, some of which are not hired by the Restaurant. We had ourselves a merry old time. What a better way to infuse good food, good music (live dj - with an open dj booth in the middle of the restaurant), with friends, all in bed! Posted by Picasa

AG and I attended our first wedding together - he being best man - in Arcata (Humboldt county) land of the green grass. Humboldt is quite beautiful, but being close to the water, the weather was chilly and foggy with some outbreaks of sun. It was quite nice meeting all 150 of his friends and family (and people say Asians produce in quantity), and seeing the area in which he grew up. Friends and family gave me some history of AG, I even met his babysitter.  Posted by Picasa
